The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Derek Clancey as assistant general manager, player personnel. Clancey joins the Maple Leafs after spending the past three seasons as the director of player personnel with the Arizona Coyotes.
Clancey has over 20 years of NHL experience, including stints with the Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, and New York Islanders. He has a strong track record of identifying and developing talent, and he is expected to play a key role in helping the Maple Leafs build a contending team.
"We are excited to add Derek to our management team," said Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas. "He is a highly respected executive with a proven track record of success. We believe he will be a valuable asset to our organization."
Clancey is a native of Toronto and played four seasons at the University of Toronto before starting his NHL career as a scout with the Bruins. He is excited to return to his hometown to join the Maple Leafs.
"I am thrilled to be joining the Toronto Maple Leafs," said Clancey. "This is a world-class organization with a rich history and a bright future. I am looking forward to working with Kyle and the rest of the staff to help the team achieve its goals."
The Maple Leafs are coming off a disappointing season in which they missed the playoffs for the second straight year. Dubas has made several changes to the team's management and coaching staff in an effort to turn things around.
The addition of Clancey is a significant step in that process. He is a well-respected executive with a proven track record of success, and he is expected to play a key role in helping the Maple Leafs build a contending team.
