Steve Albini, Record Producer and Engineer, Dies
Albini, Who Produced Nirvana's 'In Utero,' Was 59
The Prolific Engineer Also Recorded Albums by the Pixies and PJ Harvey
Steve Albini, the record producer and engineer behind generation-defining rock albums by Nirvana, the Pixies, and PJ Harvey, died Tuesday. He was 59.
Albini was born in Pasadena, Calif., on July 22, 1962. He led the abrasive underground rock bands Big Black and Shellac and recorded, by his own estimate, thousands of albums.
Albini's work was known for its raw, unvarnished sound, and he was a vocal critic of the overproduction and commercialization of rock music. He was also a pioneer in the use of digital recording technology.
In a statement, Albini's family said he died peacefully in his sleep. No cause of death was given.
